Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the most common questions about getting paid to care for a family member in Michigan.

What is Genesis Care Network?

Genesis Care Network helps Michigan families get paid for care they already give. If you help a loved one on Medicaid with daily tasks, Genesis can enroll you as their paid caregiver through Michigan's Home Help program. Genesis is a certified Adult Home Help provider enrolled with the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS), based in the Greater Lansing area and serving all 83 Michigan counties.

How is Genesis different from a home care agency?

Genesis does not send caregivers into your home. You are the caregiver. Genesis handles the enrollment, paperwork, training and payroll so you can be paid for the care you already provide to your loved one.

Can I get paid to take care of a family member in Michigan?

Yes. If your loved one has full Michigan Medicaid and needs hands-on help with daily tasks, you may be able to get paid to care for them through Michigan's Home Help program. Genesis Care Network enrolls you and pays you.

How much does a paid family caregiver make in Michigan?

Caregivers with Genesis earn $17.33 an hour, plus a $300 sign-on bonus. You're paid every two weeks by direct deposit or debit card. Paid CNA training is available if your loved one has complex medical needs.

Who can be a paid caregiver?

Adult children, grandchildren, siblings, other relatives, friends and neighbors can all be paid caregivers. You must be 18 or older and able to pass a background check.

Can a spouse get paid to care for their husband or wife?

No. Michigan rules don't allow a spouse to be paid for caring for a spouse, or a parent to be paid for caring for a child under 18.

Does my loved one need Medicaid?

Yes. Home Help is paid for by Michigan Medicaid, so your loved one needs full Michigan Medicaid. If they don't have it yet or you're not sure, Genesis can help you understand how to apply.

What kind of help counts as caregiving?

Hands-on help with daily tasks counts, such as bathing, dressing, preparing meals and taking medications.

Does my loved one have to live with me?

Your loved one needs to live in Michigan, in their own home or a family home. People living in a nursing home don't qualify.

How do I get started?

Fill out Genesis's short caregiver application. Genesis completes the enrollment steps with you. Then you finish a background check and a brief orientation, and you get paid for the care you give.

How long does it take to get paid?

The state may take up to two weeks to process an application. Your first paycheck arrives about a month after you start, when the state's payments begin.

Does it cost anything?

No. There is no cost to you or your loved one. Home Help is paid for by Michigan Medicaid.

What areas does Genesis Care Network serve?

Genesis serves families in all 83 Michigan counties, including Ingham, Eaton and Shiawassee counties and rural communities across the state.
